Why the Open Gardens are Raising Money for the South Porch
The South Porch (also known as the Town Hall) is a unique and iconic building in Cirencester, probably the most famous landmark in a beautiful Cotswold Town. In 2009 the Campaign for Cirencester Church launched the public phase of its project to raise £1.5 million to repair and interpret this special building.
The aims of the Town Hall project are to repair and conserve the badly damaged exterior stonework, to consult the community on uses for the interior of the building and to reinstate the building as the heart of the market place. Since 1490, the Town Hall has been a secular building at the centre of Cirencester's life. It has been used as an accommodation block, a tavern, a schoolroom, a court room and the Town Hall. The building is Grade 1 listed in its own right. Conservation experts have confirmed that work on the exterior stonework must start in 2010, otherwise there is a risk of losing forever its fine detail, and the jewel in the crown of mediaeval Cirencester.
